Service Programs at Wilderness Adventures
Do you remember your first service project? Do you recall the feeling it left you with knowing that you helped make this world a better place?
This week, National Volunteer Week in America, is the perfect time to look back and reflect on the positive impact our students have left on this world. Each year, Wilderness Adventures provides many students with their first meaningful volunteering opportunity. Our students clean, instruct, build, sing, play, paint, and cook (among other things) all in an effort to make a difference.
We seek not only to provide meaningful opportunities for service in many of our programs, but also hope to engage in volunteerism that will make a lasting impact. We work to find experiences where our students will not only see the fruits of their labor throughout their time with us, but also leave their trip knowing that their project will have a sustained and lasting impact for years to come.
Our school building project in Fiji is just one such example. In need of a quality educational facility for the children in the area, WA students from multiple trips came together over the course of a summer to construct a school in the town of Nakavika. While actively engaging in the local community, our students helped to lay the bricks and mortar of the Nakavika Primary School, a school that is still a critical part of the community today. The outcome was one that will have a positive impact for decades, and taught our students the essence of giving back.
It is always our hope that WA students will not only enjoy the journey of Wilderness Adventures, but also enhance their leadership skills. We want to be a launch pad. A jumping board from where they will put into practice the lessons they learned with us. Our service and volunteer efforts are a perfect example of this. Learning to give back and to make the world better a better place is a lesson from which everyone can draw.
